As Narasimha, Vishnu The Preserver
Destroys Hiranyakashipu,
The proud and tyrannical demon-king,
Who had received a boon from the gods
That he could not be killed
By either man or animal,
By night or day,
Neither on earth nor in water.

To punish him for his insolence,
Vishnu incarnated himself as a man-lion,
Emerged from a pillar at twilight,
And furiously tore him apart.

Thus as with the Norse god of love, Baldur,
Who Loki (god of mischief) could only kill
With an arrow made of mistletoe,
Or the Greek hero Achilles' heel,
Life has its subtle ways
Of letting us know
We are not invulnerable.

Nice kitty.
